How to Organize Your Storage Unit
The best way to organize a storage unit is to have a plan before you start moving everything inside. Keep heavier and less frequently used items toward the back, place things you’ll need more often toward the front, maximize vertical space and leave yourself a pathway whenever possible. A little organization on move-in day can save you a lot of searching later!
12 Packing Tips for Self Storage
1. Use Sturdy, Similar-Sized Boxes
Quality moving boxes are easier to stack and help you make better use of your storage unit’s vertical space. Pack heavier belongings, such as books, in smaller boxes and reserve larger boxes for lighter items like bedding, pillows and clothing. Avoid overpacking boxes so they remain easy to lift and stack.
2. Label Every Box
Clearly label boxes on more than one side so you can quickly identify what’s inside. Consider organizing boxes by room or category, such as Kitchen, Holiday Décor, Kids’ Clothes, Office or Baby Gear. Be sure to clearly mark boxes containing fragile items.
3. Keep Frequently Used Items Near the Front
Think about what you may need to retrieve while your belongings are in storage. Seasonal decorations, business supplies, sports equipment, kids’ gear, and other frequently used items should be placed toward the front of your storage unit for easier access.
4. Leave a Walkway
Wondering how to organize a storage unit so you can actually find things later? Leave a small aisle or walkway through the center whenever space allows. It takes a little extra planning on move-in day, but your future self will thank you!
5. Disassemble Larger Furniture
Taking apart larger furniture can help you maximize storage unit space. Remove table legs, break down bed frames, and disassemble larger pieces whenever possible. Keep screws, bolts, and hardware in labeled bags and securely attach them to the corresponding furniture.
6. Protect Furniture and Mattresses
Use furniture covers, moving blankets, mattress bags, or other protective materials to help keep furniture and mattresses clean while in storage.
Avoid placing heavy boxes or objects directly on upholstered furniture.
7. Put Empty Furniture to Work
Dressers, cabinets and other furniture can provide valuable additional storage space. Use empty drawers to hold lightweight items such as linens, towels, clothing or other soft belongings.
8. Clean and Dry Everything Before Storing
Make sure furniture, appliances, outdoor equipment and other belongings are clean and completely dry before placing them into storage. Taking a little extra time to prepare your belongings can help keep them in better condition while stored.
9. Pack Fragile Items Carefully
Wrap dishes, glassware, mirrors, artwork and other breakable belongings individually with packing paper, bubble wrap or another protective material. Fill empty spaces inside boxes to prevent items from shifting. Pack plates vertically rather than laying them flat and avoid stacking heavy boxes on top of fragile items.
10. Store Books Flat
Books can get heavy quickly, so use smaller, sturdy boxes that are easy to lift. Lay books flat to help protect their spines and avoid overfilling each box.
11. Think Up, Not Just Out
One of the easiest ways to maximize space in a storage unit is to take advantage of vertical space. Place sturdy, heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top. Freestanding shelving can also make it easier to organize boxes and access individual items.
12. Create a Storage Unit Inventory
Before you finish moving in, take a few photos of your storage unit and create a simple inventory of what you’ve stored. It’s an easy step that can save you from wondering, “Did I put that in storage or is it somewhere in the house?”
